I went to Orlando for a visit but also to research the statistical probability of finding a job and happiness there. Julie (also peace corps) invited me to stay with her and allowed me to see some of the fun neighborhoods, meet some of her friends and family, and watch a distressingly slow school production of A Christmas Story. And while she went to work (also a teacher) I went to the University of Central Florida, got lost on toll roads, and dropped off resumes at a couple ESL centers. My timing has unfortunately not improved. By the time I found the right building at UCF it WAS lunchtime and everyone was already gone. When I dropped off resumes everyone in charge was busy or in meetings, because well. . .the holidays are coming up. Are these warning signs? Orlando was nice to me but it's really making me re-think my postcard shop in Key West idea. I like beach people; i just don't think I can be one of them.
And another thing. I've been hearing running propaganda from all sides with different friends training for marathons. It's made me feel like a right couch potato. I was more comfortable when all my friends WERE couch potatos and I was the really active one. Saturday morning Julie went running with her boyfriend while I slept. But the day before she bought these little packets of sugary gel that you're supposed to eat while you run to give you more energy. Now wouldn't you think the sensation of your own stomach starting to eat itself would be cause to stop running? At least to stop for a bite. Let's not forget that the original man who ran to Marathon died as soon as he arrived, and yet some just haven't heeded the warning. I was a bit unsure at first about joining the cult, but now i'm certain. NO. God love americans for their extremes, because there really are only two boxes to check. Either you repeatedly move your car from store to store in a strip mall to avoid walking (and wish they'd let you use one of those motorized chairs at walmart), or you workout so long that they have to name a new disorder after your mania for physical fitness.
So I guess what i'm saying is i'm going for a walk! but I'm taking a candy bar with me!
