Since I started teaching, several people have proposed that I should feel guilty for getting summer off. Not a bit. Teaching is like one never-ending episode of ER. Drama, drama, drama. And when you finally get your break - spring break in this case - it takes half the vacation to calm down and forget about the work left to do. So I didn't grade that many papers. Or test or the other tests, but by the end of the week I started to feel normal again. I drove all over GA visiting people. First stop doing laundry at my Mom's house. Meg and Joe came down for the Master's practice round and fed us salmon and grits. Then it was on to the Miller spa in Athens. My friend dubbed me the interruption fairy as I stopped by everyone's work place to chat. And Athens felt like a refreshing tonic as I sipped $3 coffee and pretended to grade.
I bought pants with Sara, went to the movies with David and made Patty play sick so she could show me the sites of Rome. In the best possible way it reminded me of Romanian trips. You leave your own nothing-special town for another volunteer's nothing-special town, and go out to eat and watch TV together. Because who really needs more?
